Questions phosphate buyers ask
The questions that come up before a first order, and the ones that come up again on the second. Where the honest answer is "it depends", the page says what it depends on rather than inventing a number.
Products and grades
What phosphate fertilizers do you supply from China?
Granular MAP including 11-52-0 and the Chinese grades 10-50-0 and 11-44-0; DAP 18-46-0; TSP 0-46-0; SSP in the grade your market uses; and water-soluble MAP 12-61-0, MKP 0-52-34 and urea phosphate 17-44-0. Phosphoric acid, phosphate rock and the feed phosphates are described on the site for reference but are not currently offered.
What do the three numbers in a phosphate grade mean?
Nitrogen, available phosphate and potassium, in that order, as percentages by weight. DAP 18-46-0 is 18% N and 46% P2O5 with no potassium. TSP 0-46-0 has no nitrogen. The zero matters: it tells you the product contributes nothing to that nutrient, which is exactly what you want when the other two are already balanced.
What is the difference between available and water-soluble P2O5?
Available P2O5 is what the standard citrate extraction shows the plant can access; it includes the water-soluble fraction plus the fraction that becomes available in the soil. Water-soluble P2O5 dissolves immediately. MAP and DAP typically run 87–90% of their available P2O5 as water-soluble. The exact figure belongs on the lot COA, and the basis belongs in the contract.
Why does China offer MAP 10-50-0 and 11-44-0 when the standard grade is 11-52-0?
Because blending plants buy on nutrient cost, not on grade name. A 10-50-0 or 11-44-0 granule is cheaper per tonne and is used to bring phosphate into a compound that is already receiving P2O5 from another source. If you need the highest concentration for a long freight leg, specify 11-52-0.
Is water-soluble MAP 12-61-0 the same product as MAP 11-52-0?
No. Both are monoammonium phosphate, but 11-52-0 is a granule with filler and a partly soluble phosphate, made for soil application. 12-61-0 is a purified crystal with essentially no insoluble residue, made to dissolve. Substituting one for the other in a fertigation programme will block the system.
Do you supply NPK compounds?
We supply the phosphate component and can discuss compound formulations built on it. A finished NPK is a separate product with its own formulation, granulation and registration requirements, and it is quoted per formulation rather than from a list.
Specification and quality
What documentation comes with a shipment?
Certificate of analysis for the production lot, technical data sheet, material safety data sheet, packing list, commercial invoice, and certificate of origin. Phytosanitary certification and any destination-specific declaration are added where the importing country requires them, and are confirmed before the contract rather than assumed.
Who issues the COA — you or the factory?
The certificate of analysis is issued for the production lot by the producer. We do not write or alter a COA; a trader-issued analysis that does not come from the plant is worth nothing at the port, and in a letter of credit context it is worse than nothing.
Can you supply a pre-shipment sample?
For most grades, yes, and it is the sensible way to settle a specification argument before committing to a cargo. Sampling, sealing and courier costs are quoted with the sample request. Ask early: a sample takes time to draw and ship, and it is not something to arrange in the week before loading.
What does "confirmed per lot" mean on the specification table?
It means the figure is a property of the production lot rather than of the product, so printing a number on a website would be inventing one. Moisture, granule size distribution, crushing strength, bulk density and free acid are all in that category. They are measured on the lot and stated on its COA.
Do you provide a third-party inspection?
Third-party inspection can be arranged on request — SGS, Intertek, Bureau Veritas or a named local surveyor — at the buyer's cost, with the scope agreed in advance. It is worth doing when the cargo is large, when the destination authority samples on arrival, or when the specification has been disputed before.
Orders, terms and payment
Do you quote FOB only, or CFR and CIF as well?
Quotations are mainly FOB Chinese ports. CFR or CIF may be considered on request, subject to confirmation at the time of quotation — ocean freight moves, so a CFR or CIF rate is confirmed against the sailing rather than published as a standing figure. Send the discharge port and the basis you want to work on, and the quotation states which basis it is issued on so it can be compared directly with the offers already on your desk.
What payment terms are available?
Payment is by T/T, subject to agreement for the specific order. The deposit and balance terms are stated in the sales contract. The deposit and balance split, and the timing of each, are agreed for the order and written into the sales contract. They are not published here because they depend on the product, the quantity and the relationship, not on a standard schedule.
What is the minimum order quantity?
It depends on the product and the destination. Bulk MAP and DAP usually move by the container or the vessel lot. Water-soluble grades such as MKP move in smaller quantities, commonly a few hundred tonnes. A trial lot is possible on some grades. Ask with your requirement and you will get a straight answer rather than a floor price.
Which port does the cargo load from?
The loading port is named in the quotation. It follows the production source and the sailing available at the time of booking, and it is confirmed in the sales contract before shipment.
How long does delivery take?
Lead time depends on whether the grade is on the current production schedule, on the packaging, and on the sailing. It is quoted per order. What we will not do is give a delivery date before the grade and quantity are fixed, because that date would be a guess dressed up as a commitment.
Can you handle the import registration in my country?
No. Fertilizer registration and import licensing are the importer's responsibility and are issued in the destination country. What we can do is supply the product documentation the registration requires — COA, TDS, MSDS, composition and origin — in the form your authority asks for.
Shipping, packaging and export
What packaging is available?
25 kg or 50 kg PP woven bags with a PE liner, 1000 kg or 1250 kg jumbo bags (FIBC), and bulk in vessel for full cargoes. Bag colour, printing, liner specification and marks are agreed per order, and they are stated on the quotation so two offers can be compared on the same basis.
How many tonnes fit in a container?
It depends on the packaging, the container type and the weight limit of the destination country, so there is no single answer. In practice a 20-foot container of 50 kg bags loads around 25–27 tonnes and a 40-foot around 27 tonnes, but the limit that governs is the one your customs authority enforces. The loaded quantity is confirmed per order.
Is phosphate fertilizer dangerous goods?
The solid phosphate fertilizers described on this site — MAP, DAP, TSP and SSP — are not classified as dangerous goods for sea transport and are carried as general cargo. Phosphoric acid is: it is UN 1805, Class 8, corrosive, and requires dangerous goods documentation and an approved carrier. The two are not comparable cargoes.
Can you ship in bulk rather than in bags?
Yes, for full vessel cargoes where the receiver has silo capacity. Bulk changes the freight calculation and the loading rate, and it requires the discharge port to have the handling equipment. It is worth comparing against jumbo bags before assuming bulk is cheaper.
What are the Chinese export requirements for phosphate fertilizer?
Chinese fertilizer export is subject to inspection and to the licensing regime in force at the time of shipment. The specific requirement is confirmed per order before the contract is signed. It is not a fixed rule that can be quoted from a website, and any site that gives you a definitive answer without checking is guessing.
